Dudjom Tersar Ngondro

Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje

His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche embodied a great power, making it possible for anyone connecting with him ~ be it through seeing, hearing, touching or becoming his student ~ to attain liberation. Dudjom Rinpoche’s activities grew while he traveled and taught spreading dharma throughout the world. By revealing multitudes of mind treasure teachings, compiling and restoring many old termas, and creating volumes of text, he repaired and expanded the Nyingma lineage which had become dangerously thin. His texts included profound sadhanas and teachings, spanning the complete path of vajrayana from beginning to end.

The Dudjom Tersar Lineage includes both Dudjom Lingpa’s and His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche’s cycles of teachings. The Dudjom Tersar Ngondro is the foundation practice for both the Dudjom Tersar Lineage and the entire vajrayana Buddhist path.

Ngondro Online Retreat with Lama Sonam Tsering and Sam Bercholz

April 4-5 with Sam Bercholz
April 6-12 with Lama Sonam Tsering

The first weekend will feature teachings by Sam Bercholz, senior student of Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, who personally authorized him to teach. Sam has called the weekend, Meditation and the Development of Faith: Essential Teachings from H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche and Thinley Norbu Rinpoche. The weekend will be a combination of teachings from Dungse Rinpoche’s The Cascading Waterfall Of Nectar and also Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche’s teachings on meditation, The Play of Thought. Sam requests that each participant have a copy of The Cascading Waterfall of Nectar, available at Dharma Treasures. The Play of Thought can be downloaded for free here.

Sam has said, “The Play of Thought by Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche is one of the best teachings you can study to help stabilize your mind. It is an important aspect of dharma that sometimes is easily forgotten, especially for Ngondro and Vajrayana practice. It gives a necessary foundation for preliminary practices and advanced practices alike.”

The two days with Sam will also include teachings and practice on Shinay (calm abiding) and Lhakthong (penetrating insight) meditation. Participants will be able to submit questions that Sam will answer during one of the sessions on the second day. Sam is also giving participants the opportunity for a personal interview by Facetime or Zoom for up to one week after the teachings.

The retreat will continue with Lama Sonam Tsering Rinpoche, who will teach on “How Ngondro Can Support You in This Difficult Time”. Lama Sonam will give a series of one-hour teachings each day from April 6-12.

The Essence of the Path

To my Lord of Dharma, peerless, kind
My glorious Lama, homage!
His lotus feet I place
Upon my chakra of great bliss.

Here is my advice,
Some counsel useful for your mind.

Not to keep yourself from evil actions
Is to have no pratimoksha,

Not to work for others’ welfare
Is to have no bodhicitta.

Not to master pure perception
Is to have no Secret Mantra.

If illusions don’t collapse,
There is no realization.

If you opt for one side or the other,
That is not the View.

If you have a goal in mind,
That is not the Meditation.

If your conduct is a contrivance,
That is not the Action.

If you hope and wish,
You’ll have no Fruit.

Those with faith will go for refuge;
Those who have compassion will have bodhicitta;
Those with wisdom will gain realization;
Those who have devotion harvest blessings.

Those who have a sense of shame are careful how they act;
Careful in their actions, they are self-possessed;
Self-possessed, they keep their vows and pledges;
Keeping vows and pledges, they will have accomplishment.

Peaceful self-control: the sign of one who’s heard the teachings!
Few defiled emotions are the mark of one who meditates.
Harmony with others is the sign of one who practices.
A blissful heart is witness to accomplishment.

The root of Dharma is your very mind.
Tame it and you’re practicing the Dharma.
To practice Dharma is to tame your mind –
And when you tame it, then you will be free!
