2024 Troma Nakmo Ngondro Retreat

Troma Nagmo Retreat, Pema Osel Ling

Dudjom Lingpa’s Troma Nagmo Ngondro,
Four Feasts and
Sadhana Practice Retreat
June 1 – 5, 2024
Empowerment, Oral Reading Transmission,
Teachings and Practice with Tulku Thadral Rinpoche

The “Sole Mother” or Troma Nagmo, the Black Wrathful Dakini, is one of the most profound treasures revealed by Thrakthung Dudjom Lingpa. Chöd, or severance, is the practice that directly severs the root of suffering, self-fixation, with exceptionally expedient wisdom methods. It is well known that through the Troma Nagmo cycle of practice, thirteen of Dudjom Lingpa’s disciples attained rainbow body, and it is predicted that many more will continue for generations to come.

During this practice-oriented retreat we will engage in the Ngondro Practice, Concise and Intermediate Sadhana and Four Feasts.

Lama Sonam Rinpoche gives this background about the Troma Nakmo Ngondro Retreat

This year during Summer Retreat we will practice Troma Nagmo from Traktung Dudjom Lingpa’s pure vision treasure revelation Chönyi Namkhay Longdzö, The Treasury of the Expanse of the Sky of Dharmata: The Profound Heart-Essence of Mahasiddha Saraha, Pith Instructions for Severing Attachment and Expectations and Recognizing the Natural State of One’s Own Mind.

Save the Date: August 4th

Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche

Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche, founder of the Pristine Mind Foundation, presents “The Connection Between Dzogchen and Ngondro” on August 4, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm (Pacific). Save the date to join in person at Pema Osel Ling or via YouTube stream.

Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche will talk about his new book, “From Foundation To Summit”, due to be released in July 2024. The publisher has this summary introduction to Rinpoche’s book: “Essential instructions on the Vajrayana path to ultimate enlightenment, from the foundational contemplations about the nature of reality to the ultimate realizations of the wisdom of Dzogchen.

“In the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, before one can receive empowerments and pointing-out instructions from a dharma master, one must first open and prepare the mind by engaging in the foundational practices (ngondro). This consists of completing a specified number of repetitions of the rituals of taking refuge, arousing the mind of awakening (bodhichitta), mandala offering, Vajrasattva purification, and Guru Yoga.

“In this book, Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche brilliantly explains how to engage in the foundational practice according to the New Treasures of the Dudjom tradition, the Dudjom Tersar. And from the outset, Orgyen Chowang introduces the pristine teachings of Dzogchen, the pinnacle of the Nyingma path, to provide the context that informs every stage of the path to awakening.

“This book is based on a series of oral teachings on Thinley Norbu’s text A Cascading Waterfall of Nectar, itself a teaching on the Dudjom Tersar, that Orgyen Chowang gave to Western students over a three-month period in 1997. He explains in a very fresh, uncomplicated way such topics as receiving the blessings from the lama, the nature of awakening, the role of pointing-out instructions, tranquility and insight meditation, the three bodies of enlightenment, and the Dzogchen practices of trekchöd (cutting through) and thögal (passing over). This book will be of immense benefit to those engaged in the Dudjom Tersar ngöndro, those who have already finished their ngöndro accumulations, and those engaged in the foundational practice from other Nyingma lineages.”

Mendrup Chömen

HH Dudjom Rinpoche Pema Sangye Shepa receiving Siddhis from Tulku Thadral Rinpoche and Lama Sonam Tsering Rinpoche 2018 Vajrakilaya Mendrup Drupchen at Pema Osel Ling

Lama Sonam Tsering Rinpoche talks about the Mendrup Practice:

This is a short reminder addressed to the faithful students, dharma brothers and sisters, ordained and lay practitioners, male and female, of high and low status, all of you who want to enter the profound mandala of the group gathering practice connected with the profound ripening and liberating samaya substance düdtsi chömen (nectar medicine that makes all phenomena pure) here at Pema Osel Ling.

The pinnacle of the Buddhist teachings, the three collections of highest yoga tantras of the Secret Mantra Vajrayana, are differentiated from the common vehicles that use teachings from the Vinaya and Sutras, etc, because the Vajrayana has so many more techniques, greater methods, more profound meaning, less hardship, and the possibility of attaining buddhahood in one lifetime.

Düdtsi chömen, also called mendrup, is praised as the supreme samaya substance. It is a wish-fulfilling jewel that grants liberation without practicing, so among the four types of liberation it is called “liberation upon taste”.

In Eight Volumes of Nectar it says,
The three realms are, from the beginning, the five nectars.
They are uncontrived, spontaneously present, perfectly enlightened.
The three realms of the three poisons are wisdom body, speech, and mind
Because they are primordially pure nectar.
All phenomena that make up the three realms, including the five passions, the five sense pleasures, the five elements, and the five aggregates, are actually enlightened in their nature as the male and female deities of the Five Buddha Families.
That is why it is said that, They are primordially pure, self arisen,
United in equality with all buddhas.

The Vajrayana Foundation invites you to join in the sacred practice of making Mendrup, Dharma medicine. This year during the Khandro Thik Thuk (a terma of Dudjom Rinpoche Jigdral Yeshe Dorje revealed as a gongter in 1928) Mendrup Drubcpen, this Tibetan medicine, believed to liberate through taste, will be empowered, blessed and consecrated.
Join us for three retreats:

  2. Shitro Ngakso 100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities) Empowerment, Retreat and Neydren Ceremony
  3. Collection of Seven Treasures Guru Rinpoche Retreat and Empowerment

We will engage in the physically demanding process of drying and rolling the Mendrup. Volunteers commit to six hours a day, with opportunities to attend retreat sessions. Accommodation and meals will be provided, with a contribution towards food appreciated. The rolling starts May 30th  and continues until June 16, with the possibility of extension. All volunteers receive Mendrup to take home whether full-time or part-time. Come share in this opportunity for merit, purification, and gathering with Sangha amidst the beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
