This is the Essence of Practice

Pray to your Lama and, while praying, blend your mind inseparably with your Lama’s wisdom mind.
Having merged inseparably, settle in the state of naturalness, the nature of mind.

To be settled in the state of naturalness, this fresh knowing
Uncontrived and unaltered, is luminous naked awareness.
When thoughts arise within that nature,
Recognize them on arising, and relax within that recognition.
Their arising and liberation occur simultaneously, like a drawing on the water’s surface.

When thoughts do not arise, that is non-meditation free from thoughts.
Emptiness, beyond meditator and object of meditation,
Is called ultimate wisdom present from the beginning.
Give up hope and fear; hold to the natural state of awareness.

Thoughts are delusion; stop following after them.
Hope and fear are obstacles; don’t go to greet them.
If you can rest within the nature that is beyond intellect and activity,
You will definitely discover the dharmakaya in your own heart.

Guru Padmasambhava

Guru Rinpoche at Pema Osel Ling

Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, is a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism. His name means “Lotus Born,” reflecting the legend that he was born from a lotus flower. He is considered the second Buddha in the Nyingma tradition, one of the oldest schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

Guru Rinpoche’s significance stems from several key aspects:

  1. Introduction of Buddhism to Tibet: He is credited with bringing Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. Invited by King Trisong Detsen, Guru Rinpoche helped establish the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Samye Monastery, overcoming various obstacles, including local deities and spirits opposed to Buddhism.
  2. Teachings and Practices: He is associated with many important teachings and practices, particularly the Vajrayana (Tantric) aspect of Buddhism. His teachings include the “Treasure Texts” (Termas), which he concealed to be discovered in later times by designated spiritual heirs (Tertons).
  3. Spiritual Influence: Guru Rinpoche is believed to have immense spiritual powers, including the ability to subdue negative forces and manifest in various forms. This has contributed to his enduring veneration and the belief that he continues to protect and guide practitioners.
  4. Cultural Integration: His integration of local Tibetan beliefs with Buddhist teachings helped Buddhism take root deeply in Tibetan culture. His stories and legends are woven into the cultural and religious fabric of Tibetan society.

Because of these reasons, Guru Rinpoche holds a special place in Tibetan Buddhism and has a large following. His influence extends beyond Tibet, attracting followers from various parts of the world interested in Vajrayana Buddhism.

Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche ~ Masks Made by Lama Tharchin Rinpoche and maintained by Nirabra Taylor, Magical Display of the Arts

The Collection of Seven Treasures, the most supreme among all Lama Accomplishment (Ladrup) practices was compiled by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche from seven great treasures of the Nyingma Lineage, the Gathering of Secrets (Sangwa Düpa) of Guru Chöwang, the Gathering of the Eight Commands (Kagyay Düpa) of Dorje Lingpa, the Gathering of the Innermost Essence (Yangnying Düpa) of Ratna Lingpa, the Gem Ocean (Norbu Gyatso) of Padma Lingpa, the Gathering of the Victorious Ones (Gyalwa Düpa) of Zhigpo Lingpa, the Complete Gathering of the Enlightened Intent (Gongpa Yongdü) of Düdül Lingpa, and the Complete Gathering of the Sugatas (Deshek Yongdü) of Dudjom Rinpoche himself. He compiled them all into one simple practice which encompasses the entire Nyingma Lineage, through which we can actually accomplish enlightenment in a single lifetime.”

Join us on June 16th, from 5am to 7pm at Pema Osel Ling to celebrate the holy and auspicious birthday of Guru Padmasambhava. This sacred occasion will feature Siddhis, Long Life practice, Offerings, Tsog, and Sacred Dance of the Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche
